Reasons to use public transport

There are powerful reasons to use group public passenger transport in city.

First of all, we have to mention that the uncontrolled city growth in the city pushes the people to live in the outskirts where it is less populated, there are fewer services, and schools and jobs are further away. This multiplies the need of more and longer journeys.

Group transport is handicapped by the population dispersion and the fact that most of the journeys are by car, which adds to traffic congestion, loss of time, energy and territory consumption, pollution increase and a huge social cost.

The start point of all this is the lack of a balanced city planning and the wrong election of place of residence by some citizens who chose to live far from school, shops, and work. Proximity to all these places allows people to go on foot, by bike or by public transport.

The increase of cars implies an increase of congestion, lost hours, and external costs that implies a degradation of citizen life quality, who find themselves living in a city invaded by cars.

Take into account that private cars are parked 95% of the time and they fill the same space as the office where its driver works. In its journey from home to work, a car consumes between 20 and 50 times more space than a bus. Moreover, when a passenger hops off a bus, there is no need to park it and there is more space left for other passengers, easily more than 1000 per day, to use it. Most of the private vehicles only make two journeys per day with just one passenger while the rest of the time they remain occupying a valuable parking space in the centre of our cities.

In addition, a private vehicle consumes and pollutes between 3 and 5 times more than a private car.

The city needs a proficiency public transport to maintain the diverse activities that take place in it. Shops, work places, schools, medical and leisure centres are, most of the times, unthinkable without an efficient public transport system that allows people to reach them.
